Spark Plugs
My car has rough running, high fuel consumption and black spark plugs, what is wrong ?
Carbon fouling (spark plug firing end is completely black) can be a problem on older cars that have a carburetor. If a car has misfires and the spark plug is black with carbon fouling, the main cause is an over rich air/fuel mixture. (This means too much fuel) and also in some cases the engine not getting up to temperature. What happens many times is that a car goes to the garage for a service, the car gets new oil, spark plugs and filters and the carburettor is adjusted. Then most likely the mixture is set too rich and this causes a relatively cool combustion that produces a lot of carbon. This carbon is deposited on the insulator nose of the spark plug and causes the high Voltage to 'leak away' and the result is a non-smooth engine and misfires under acceleration.
